Planning playground safety, fall areas and surfacing together

See on Instagram

A wooden play structure is one part of the installation. Its placement, anchoring, surrounding space and surface must work together before the area is used.

Start with the chosen equipment

Each proposed model needs to be identified in the layout. Dimensions, access, moving parts and the relevant technical information guide the surrounding space and installation. Do not infer the required clearance from the outline of a product photograph.

The arrangement also needs to account for paths, boundaries and other activities. Adding a second item requires a new look at the complete area rather than assuming any empty space is usable.

Distinguish platform height from fall-height information

The height of one visible platform is not a universal specification for the whole playground surface. Use the relevant technical data for the selected equipment when assessing fall areas and surfacing.

Surface selection must take account of the required impact attenuation. Rubber tiles and other systems should be specified using their applicable performance documentation, installation conditions and the project requirements.

Specify a surface system, not a generic thickness

A single thickness cannot be recommended for every material or every play structure. The surface product, its supporting base and the installation method all form part of the specification.

Drainage, levels and edges should be coordinated before works start. Existing concrete or paving may be a construction base in a designed system, but it should not be assumed to provide the required impact attenuation on its own.

Plan timber protection and inspection

Moisture control, appropriate surface protection and details that limit prolonged water exposure support the performance of outdoor timber. Correct anchoring, inspection of connections and periodic maintenance remain necessary.

After installation, the operator needs a clear plan for checks and repairs. The surface and the space around the equipment are included in that ongoing responsibility.

Confirm the handover conditions

EN 1176-oriented planning concerns the complete equipment installation. Request the documentation applicable to your selected models and confirm any project-specific inspection requirements. Open the area only after the installation, anchoring, clearances and required surface have been checked.
